DriveMail

Support

DriveMail announces new email while you drive, reads or summarizes it aloud, and lets you reply by voice.

Need help? Email Dave Pickles, DriveMail's developer, at

Please include your iPhone model, iOS version, which email service you're using, and what happened.

Getting started

  1. Open DriveMail and tap the gear icon to open Settings.
  2. Under Email providers, switch on the services you use.
  3. Fill in the sign-in details for each one (see below), and give each a short spoken nickname if you like, such as "work" or "personal".
  4. Mount your phone, tap Start driving, and keep DriveMail open during your trip.

DriveMail announces email that arrives after you tap Start driving. Set things up while parked.

To check that everything works, tap Send me a test email on the main screen after you start. DriveMail emails your iCloud, Gmail, or Yahoo account from itself and announces it a few seconds later.

Setting up your email

iCloud Mail

Use an app-specific password, not your Apple Account password. Create one at account.apple.com under Sign-In and Security › App-Specific Passwords. Your Apple Account needs two-factor authentication.

Gmail

Turn on 2-Step Verification in your Google Account, then create an app password at myaccount.google.com/apppasswords. Work or school Google accounts may have app passwords turned off by an administrator.

Yahoo Mail

In Yahoo's Account security page, choose Generate app password, name it DriveMail, and paste the password into DriveMail.

Outlook (personal)

For Outlook.com, Hotmail, and Live addresses, tap Add personal Outlook and sign in on Microsoft's page. DriveMail never sees your Microsoft password.

Outlook (work, Microsoft 365)

Tap Add work Outlook, then sign in with your work email and network password and approve the number in Microsoft Authenticator. Many companies require IT approval before outside apps can read work email. If you see "Need admin approval", ask your IT department to approve DriveMail.

What you can say

A short tone plays when it's your turn to talk.

When DriveMail asksYou can say
"Want me to read it?"yes, sure, read it · no, skip, later · stop
"Want me to read the whole email?" (after a summary)yes · no · stop
"Would you like to reply?"yes · no · stop
After your reply is read backsend it · change it · cancel

Emails you skip are saved until you stop driving. When you're ready, tap Read skipped emails on the main screen and DriveMail reads them one after another, offering a reply after each.

Troubleshooting

"Sign-in failed" or "Couldn't sign in"

Make sure you're using an app password, not your regular password, and that the email address is exactly right. Changing your main account password can cancel app passwords, so you may need a new one. For Outlook, remove the account and add it again.

DriveMail doesn't understand my answers

Wait for the tone before speaking, and use short answers like "yes", "no", or "send it". DriveMail listens with your iPhone's microphone, so a mount close to you helps, as does lowering music or fan noise.

The voice is too quiet or hard to hear

Turn up your car's volume while DriveMail is speaking. In Settings › Voice & speed, you can switch on Pause music while DriveMail talks, choose a different voice, or change the speaking speed. Downloading an Enhanced or Premium voice in the iPhone Settings app (Accessibility › Spoken Content › Voices) makes reading much clearer.

Summaries aren't available

Summaries use Apple Intelligence, which needs a supported iPhone with Apple Intelligence turned on. Without it, DriveMail reads the first part of long emails instead.

My reply appears twice in my Sent folder

Please let us know which email service you're using, so DriveMail can be updated to stop saving the extra copy.

Can DriveMail work with Proton Mail or other services?

DriveMail currently supports iCloud Mail, Gmail, Yahoo Mail, and Outlook. Proton Mail doesn't allow other iPhone apps to connect. For Proton Mail, you can have Siri read its notifications aloud: in the iPhone Settings app, go to Notifications › Announce Notifications.
